Those with Bulimba or Hawthorne real estate will be looking forward to the best that Brisbane has to offer this Christmas. Whether this is spending time on the river, enjoying the local reserves or a cold beer on the deck, make sure that your holiday season is a safe one.
Neighbourhood Planning and Development Assessment Chairman Councillor Amanda Cooper said that the Brisbane City Council was issuing a timely seasonal reminder to check the safety of decks at home.
With large gatherings, small children and plenty of dancing, cricket, running and wrestling on your deck this summer, it's important that the structure is up to the task.
"The festive season is a time for celebrations and gatherings and I want to remind residents of the importance of having compliant timber decks and balconies, particularly on homes dating pre-World War Two," said Cr Cooper.
Councillor Cooper went on to say that the construction of of decks prior to 1946 used methods which, although common at the time, may not stand up to todays regulations. A cursory glance may not be sufficient to detect underlying structural problems and the council recommends a professional inspection.
