Kids are tough work, and preparing your new home for their arrival shouldn't be taken lightly.
If you're expanding your family and are thinking about how to make your piece of Hawthorne real estate baby-friendly, consider the following advice.
Install child-proof latches
You will want to keep all potential poisons such as medicines, vitamins and cleaning products under lock and key. As children begin to crawl and walk they can become very inquisitive, so it's best to lock away dangerous items with child-proof latches.
These latches can be bought from most hardware stores or supermarkets. If you have children under age 3 you will want latches that require two actions, such as a push and twist system.
Make sure the adults in your house can still open the cupboards with ease.
Add safety gates
If your home has stairs or there are rooms you won't be able to child-proof, it's best to block them off using a safety gate. These generally screw into the walls, or can be suspended between doorways to prevent damage to mouldings.
Cover your electrical outlets
You can buy plastic covers to install over electrical outlets in your home from many hardware stores. Just make sure they're not easily removed by tiny hands, and that they're large enough that children won't choke on them if they do become dislodged.
