Brisbane has a thriving cultural scene and there are plenty of exhibitions to check out as we head into autumn 2023.

If you’d like to attend an art show or event, there are plenty to add to your calendar.

QAGOMA

April is your last month to catch the Air exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). This exhibition showcases more than 30 significant Australian and international artists, with works that “reflect the vitality of our shared atmosphere.”

Reviews say Air is confirmation “that QAGOMA is not afraid to go big – many of these works are oversized – and that it is not afraid to explore complex themes.” The exhibition takes up the entire ground floor, inviting patrons to take a journey through this invisible and vital element.

Jan Murphy Gallery

As a venue that represents established and emerging contemporary Australian artists, Jan Murphy Gallery is coming up to its 30 year anniversary. Located at 486 Brunswick St in Fortitude Valley, the gallery often features the work of individual artists.

In March, Lucy Culliton’s ‘Home Grown’ showcases the artist’s beautiful home and garden.

From March to April, an offsite exhibition will be hosted at The Calile Hotel. From photographer Michael Cook, this collection is called ‘Fake’, and tells a unique story set in the Central Australian desert as it brings high fashion and remote settings together to create a striking contrast.

Edwina Corlette

You’ll find this gallery on Brunswick Street in New Farm, representing a diverse range of young Australian artists. The schedule is packed in autumn, and as real estate agents we can’t help but be intrigued by the show called ‘All My Friends Have White Walls And Beige Carpet’. The artist Eliza Gosse paints “imagined interiors” so of course we can’t wait to see her work.

The schedule is completely packed over at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for autumn.

Get in quick to catch one of the final performances of the Tony Award-winning Choir Boy, book for the global hit musical Hamilton or grab a ticket to catch international stars Rob Brydon or Weird Al Yankovich in March. The Queensland Ballet will perform Giselle in April and Abbie Chatfield presents her Trauma Dump Tour in May.

Brisbane Writers Festival

Writing is still an art form. If you love to hear from clever novelists and brilliant minds, The Brisbane Writers Festival is set to take place from May 10th to 14th. There are more than 100 events, with a “diverse cast of writers, readers and thinkers coming together to enjoy a lively line-up of panel discussions, salons, special events and more.”

Events are a mix of in-person and online. The full lineup will be announced on March 15th.

Let us know if there are any events coming up which we have neglected to mention; we love to support the independent arts scene in our city.

On a side note, it’s wonderful to be back seeing events in person without COVID restrictions and with fewer people coming down with the virus and being forced to cancel plans. We’re loving being out and about this autumn and we look forward to seeing you at an event or exhibition soon.
